The Kalman Filter. Helping Chickens Cross the Road.

David Austin Grand Valley State University I was running some errands recently when I spied the Chicken Robot ambling down the sidewalk, then veering into the bike lane. A local grocery chain needs to transport rotisserie chickens from one of its larger stores to its downtown market. Their solution? A semi-autonomous delivery vehicle that makes the three-mile journey navigating with GPS. I was curious how this worked. The locations provided by most GPS systems are only accurate to within a meter or so. How could those juicy chickens know how to stay so carefully in the center of the bike lane? A typical solution to problems like this is an elegant algorithm, known as Kalman filtering, that’s embedded in a wide range of technology that most of us frequently either use or benefit from

The war in Ukraine isn’t working out the way Russia intended

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/02/27/ukraine-russia-invasion-tactics/  The war in Ukraine isn’t working out the way Russia intended Tactical blunders and fierce resistance from the Ukrainians risk ensnaring the Russians in a protracted conflict, military experts say The war in Ukraine isn’t going Russia’s way. Videos posted on social media show whole columns of tanks and armored vehicles have been wiped out. Others have been stopped in their tracks by ordinary Ukrainians standing on the street to block their advance. Lightly armed units propelled deep into the country without support have been surrounded and their soldiers captured or killed. Warplanes have been shot out of the skies and helicopters have been downed, according to Ukrainian and U.S. military officials. Logistics supply chains have failed, leaving troops stranded on roadsides to be captured because their vehicles ran out of fuel. Most critically, Russia has proved unable to secure air superiority over the tin

Forecasts of cross -country politicians

https://nvo.ng.ru/realty/2022-02-03/3_1175_donbass.html   Forecasts of cross -country politicians About built -in traps and trash cans Some representatives of the Russian political class today argue that Russia is able to inflict a crushing defeat on Ukraine in a few hours (and shorter periods are also mentioned) if a military conflict breaks out. Let's see how such statements correspond to reality. In the expert community of Russia, the opinion has recently taken root quite strongly that it will not even be necessary to send troops to the territory of Ukraine, since the Armed Forces of this country are in a deplorable state. Some political analysts emphasize that a powerful Russian fire strike will destroy almost all surveillance and communication systems, artillery and tank formations. Moreover, a number of experts conclude that even one crushing blow from Russia will be enough to end such a war. As a cherry on the cake, some analysts emphasize the fact that no one in Ukraine wi

(Akıncılar, by Yahya Kemal Beyatlı) The Bayraktar TB2 has changed the notion of how modern-day conflicts are being fought that, now that it has been tried and tested in at least three separate conflicts, cannot be reverted. The fact that a relatively light and inexpensive drone could not only evade but actively search out and destroy modern surface-to-air missile (SAM) and electronic warfare (EW) systems while suffering little losses in return has rightfully garnered worldwide attention. The result of the TB2's entry into combat was a stunning upset of the status quo, forcing many countries to rethink their approach to defence.   Some observers have attempted to downplay the TB2's extraordinary e
