How economics became a religion

https://www.theguardian.com/news/2017/jul/11/how-economics-became-a-religion Its moral code promises salvation, its high priests uphold their orthodoxy. But perhaps too many of its doctrines are taken on faith. By John Rapley lthough Britain has an established church, few of us today pay it much mind. We follow an even more powerful religion, around which we have oriented our lives: economics. Think about it. Economics offers a comprehensive doctrine with a moral code promising adherents salvation in this world; an ideology so compelling that the faithful remake whole societies to conform to its demands. It has its gnostics, mystics and magicians who conjure money out of thin air, using spells such as “derivative” or “structured investment vehicle”. And, like the old religions it has displaced, it has its prophets, reformists, moralists and above all, its high priests who uphold orthodoxy in the face of heresy. There are no walls between Stanford and Silicon Valley. Should there be?

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2012/04/30/get-rich-u Stanford University is so startlingly paradisial, so fragrant and sunny, it’s as if you could eat from the trees and live happily forever. Students ride their bikes through manicured quads, past blooming flowers and statues by Rodin, to buildings named for benefactors like Gates, Hewlett, and Packard. Everyone seems happy, though there is a well-known phenomenon called the “Stanford duck syndrome”: students seem cheerful, but all the while they are furiously paddling their legs to stay afloat. What they are generally paddling toward are careers of the sort that could get their names on those buildings. The campus has its jocks, stoners, and poets, but what it is famous for are budding entrepreneurs, engineers, and computer aces hoping to make their fortune in one crevasse or another of Silicon Valley. Innovation comes from myriad sources, including the bastions of East Coast learning, but Stanford has established

Slaying the 'math monster': It’s not about numbers, it’s about learning how to think

http://www.nwaonline.com/news/2017/jul/03/slaying-the-math-monster-20170703/ The tweet that raced around the internet before truth had time to put on its shoes was this: In a delicatessen in Pittsburgh, a mysterious sign had appeared adjuring customers to "Please Refrain From Discussing Mathematics While Waiting in Line." People in Pittsburgh couldn't find this deli (because it's in Connecticut). Nevertheless humorous folks felt free to decide it was a real sign posted by a real lunchman tired of having his totals second-guessed by know-it-alls. Wasn't it? Well, no. Nothing like that (see accompanying story). But the thing is, that explanation was plausible. These cashiers these days, they can't do the math, right? But who can? Math is too hard. Only numbers-people can do it. Again, not true. But as a statement of a common belief? Mmm, could be. Denise LeGrand sees evidence in restaurants, in stores. Maybe she's out with friends and i
